Nutrition and Exercise

We're just building up this area of the site. We'll be including recipes, diet-debunking, and exercise tips. You can also keep up with my triathlon training blog.

A Word About High Protein Diets
Just a word first about the recent mania of Atkins-type high protein diets:

Most of these diets are correct in identifying the main culprit in the Standard American Diet (S.A.D). This enemy is simple carbohydrates in the form of refined flour and sugars. This is what makes us fat, keeps us hungry, and promotes diseases like diabetes. Our food is overly processed and has too much fat, sugar and salt.

However... they then provide the wrong solution — eating a lot more protein and fat. This solution guides people to the outrageous conclusion that eating bacon is somehow better for you than eating an apple, orange, banana, or slice of whole wheat bread. The correct solution to the problem is eating complex carbohydrates. They fill us up, are good for our digestive system, and won't raise insulin levels the way simple carbs will.

People will argue that high protein diets are a good way to lose weight. While I don't believe that has been proven clinically, I'd still argue that weight loss is a poor measurement of what is good for you. I could poison you and you'd probably lose weight, though I don't think you'd agree with my methods.

Here's what I'd suggest you eat instead...

Super Flax Muffins
A great blend of whole wheat flour, ground flax meal, and other tidbits. Really good for you and really tasty.

100% Whole Wheat Bread w/ Flax
The best whole wheat recipe I've ever tried! It has no added oils (butter, shortening, or oil) but tastes delicious.

Supergreens
We tried out this funky herbal green drink called Supergreens from Innerlight. It's not bad, depending on how you consume it. It's made with concentrated grasses and other stuff.
